Christmas Roses

It was December 3rd, and I decided it was time to get out the Christmas decorations. First, I got out the small trees, table decorations, wreaths, and nativity scene. After placing them about the house, I decided to step outside for some fresh air. To my surprise, my rose bush had three beautiful blooms on it. November had been very kind to southern Indiana, but I knew the first freeze was looming. I carefully snipped the delicate buds, carried them inside, and placed them in a small vase.

Then I wondered where to place them. My usual window ledge and tables were decorated for Christmas. I decided to place my brave Christmas roses in front of the small tree in my sun room. They didn't last long, but it was the first time my roses ever bloomed for so long, long enough to share a space with the Christmas decorations.

I love Christmas, the whole season: the church programs, the music, the special foods, buying and wrapping gifts, and being with my family. It's always magical for me.

I still recall my favorite Christmas. I was five years old and my brother, Johnny, was seven. On Christmas morning we found under the tree complete cowboy outfits: fancy boots, riding pants, western fringed shirts, Roy Rogers gloves, neck scarves, leather belts with western buckles, and even cowboy wallets. Our parents dressed us in our new outfits and took us outside for a picture. (No flash bulbs then -only sun.) The picture shows us on the sidewalk beside our home, all decked out like two little cowhands, standing in 6 inches of snow, and squinting into the sun. I love that picture. No Christmas has ever touched the thrill of that day so long ago.
I hope someone receives a copy of The Secret of Bailey's Chase for Christmas. My wish is for that person to read it and send me a note telling me how thrilled he/she was with it. That is my Christmas Wish!
